Innocence

16/11/2018

Innocence (or the poem that wrote me)

Revisiting a time of innocence lost
Just as dreams were cruelly turned to frost
And long before we learned the cost
Of youth’s immortal nonchalance

We slumbered in the innocence of dreams
Poets, seeking banks of burbling streams
Where to hammer out our infant rhymes
Before the coming of that fateful time

I’m not sure of the reason
That life, so sweet, turned sour
And why true loves turned to treason
In Fate’s darkest hour

What wrong road taken, which mis-set sail
Caused us to tear that enchanted veil?
Separating what we know as today
From the ‘might have beens’ of yesterday

What conspiracy confounded our young powers
What poison seeped from Fate’s dark tower
Would we have been able to stem its tide
With greater passion, or less pride?

Should some things muttered have remained unsaid?
Perhaps fires weren’t doused before going to bed
These are each enough to change our fate
Stranding us outside Time’s strict gate

This can change the way we roll
Crush our dreams and take its toll
On all that we had wished to be
When Love was sweet and the world was free.
